Inspiring and supporting young people seriously injured through sport

BEN PEARSON

Ben, 24, broke two bones in his leg whilst playing rugby. Despite the relatively straightforward procedure required to mend the break, complications led to 13 further operations and countless infections, meaning ultimately Ben had to have his leg amputated.

Ben says: “I lost my right leg below the knee and had to learn to walk and run again, which was a huge struggle.”

Through their contacts, the Foundation helped Ben secure a place studying at Loughborough University - supporting him to focus on his future following his life-changing injury and what he could do, not what he couldn’t.

Ben has since become a member of the University’s para athletics team and has big ambitions to be at the next Paralympics. Ben joined the community at the Get Busy Living centre in September 2020 and regularly uses the gym to support his training.

Ben adds: “If were asked to explain The Matt Hampson Foundation to others, it’s easy. It’s the most inspirational, fun and amazing place.”
