Inspiring and supporting young people seriously injured through sport

Skierg Challenge

The Foundation have been involved this week with representing the midlands in The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Skierg Challenge with Gym Possible, who are representing the north and the Rooprai Spinal Trust, who are representing the south. The Skierg uses the same upper body muscles as Nordic Skiing and is one of the toughest workouts around. It works in a way where at least 2 competitors from each team ski for as far as they can in 10 minutes for themselves per day from the 13th of January until the 14th of February, thus making it a 5-week competition. There are daily winners, weekly winners and an overall winner.

As every spinal cord injury is different, there is a classification system, which helps level the playing field by taking a higher percentage off the final score if a person has a lower injury (due to them having more movement). For example, a low paraplegic would have a 50% reduction on their final score in comparison to a high tetraplegic who would have 20% taken off of their final score.

We wish the best of luck to all of the competitors and especially the ones at the Foundation. It should be an exciting few weeks!
