Inspiring and Supporting young people seriously injured through sport

Taylor Gough

Taylor was just 20 when he was involved in a car crash that paralysed him. He suffered multiple injuries including severe spinal injuries and was told he’d be unlikely to walk again. Taylor was playing for Leicester Tigers at the time of his accident, the same club that Matt belonged to at a similar age.

During Taylor’s time in hospital recovering, he really struggled to accept the different course that his life would now take and was devastated to lose the career that he’d always dreamed about.

Matt began mentoring the young sportsman, helping him to come to terms with his injuries and share his own experiences in an attempt to help Taylor get busy living and rebuild his life. Taylor joined the Foundation community in October 2020 once he was discharged from hospital. He began physiotherapy with the team at the centre’s gym as well as receiving personal training sessions to help improve his mobility and rebuild his muscles and strength. Taylor is now in training to become a para canoeist and is on the Foundation's athlete development programme.

Taylor says: “I can’t actually put into words the positive impact that the Matt Hampson Foundation has had on my physical and mental well-being in such a short space of time.

It was so motivating for me when I was in hospital knowing I had such an incredible place to come out to, which would help with my development. I have become much more mobile and independent since coming to the centre and am experiencing less pain. It has made day-to-day tasks such as dressing and getting in and out of the car so much easier already.

I’ve also walked for the first time assisted by the physio team – something I was told would be very unlikely to happen!”
